British Military Buses in Malta

Buses used by the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force

What we know so far ...

Links to the individual Services ...

The three Services of the British military (Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force) have all operated their own buses in Malta between the end of the Second World War and the 1970s when the last of the Military left the islands.

A certain amount of knowledge has been gained from either official records or from a limited number of photographs that have come to light.

The official sources include the MT records for the RAF, held at the RAF Museum in Hendon (north London) and mentions in the civilian official vehicle files in the hands of Transport Malta (and originally compiled by the Malta Police authorities).

The MT records of the Army and Navy have not been examined – those for the Army are believed to still exist in a museum collection somewhere, but are not known to be currently accessible to the public. Those for the Navy disappeared a number of years ago and it is believed may no longer exist. If anyone knows any more about the Army or Navy MT records, please get in touch via the “Contact Us” button below.

Photographs of military buses in Malta are few, and those we have copies of, we do not currently have permission to post online. If you know of any photos showing buses operating with the RN, RAF or Army in Malta please get in touch – even if the bus just appears in the background.

If you served with the British Forces, or were in Malta because a family member was in the military, and you remember seeing / using the buses, again please get in touch – even a small piece of information may help fill in a gap in our knowledge.
Below are links to pages for each of the three Services. On each page we list all we currently know about that Service’s buses, and what happened to them (in some cases they formed the basis of new route buses on the island). Any photos we get permission to post online will also appear on these pages.
